True Devotion To Mary
Saint Louis Marie de Montfort's treatise on True Devotion to Mary influenced the spirituality and charism of the Legion of Mary. It would be an understatement to say that a Legionary whose devotion to Our Lady is at best "unpredictable and inconstant" is not an asset to her army. Frank Duff, in the Legion Handbook Chapter 6, reinforces the importance of this devotion that he wrote an entire chapter about it in the Legion Handbook. "The Legionaries Should Undertake DeMontort's True Devotion to Mary," True Devotion requires a formal Act of Consecration to Christ through Mary. It does not detract one from Christ, as the ultimate goal of our devotion to her is to find Christ in us. thus, our consecration to Our Lady is one of slavery in which - we become her slaves, giving to her, as Saint Louis Marie De Montfort proposes - our body with all its senses, our soul with all its powers, our exterior goods and fortunes, our interior and spiritual goods. merits, good works - past, present and future. The San Mateo County Comitium encourages all its Praesidia to study and read De Montfort's True Devotion. Also promote, increase awareness and interest on it among fellow Legion members and other Catholics especially our family and friends. True Devotion to Mary is a way of Christian living expressed by our total dependence on Mary and pursuing to the best we can, a holy and sanctified life. This devotion if it were to be true and genuine must be Christ-centered, otherwise, it would be a false devotion to the Blessed Mother. The San Mateo County Comitium remains steadfast in its campaign in advancing True Devotion to Mary through orientation workshops and seminars. This section is dedicated as a means to provide a resourceful tool for our members in the promotion on True Devotion to Mary. Please feel free to use the different website links and other tools and resources to assist you in carrying this important and invaluable aspect of our Legion apostolate. If you are interested to hold a workshop for members of your parish, please let us know so we can arrange for a workshop (Please feel free to submit the form on this page). Let us know your thoughts and ideas in bringing Jesus through Mary to the world!
Excerpts from True Devotion (Saint Louis Marie de Montfort)
True Devotion to Mary is Christo-centric
61, JESUS CHRIST our Saviour, true God and true Man, ought to be the last end of all our other devotions, else they are false and delusive. Jesus Christ is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end of all things. We labour not, as the Apostle says, except to render every man perfect in Jesus Christ; because it is in Him alone that the whole plenitude of the Divinity dwells, together with all the other plenitudes of graces, virtues, and perfections; because it is in Him alone that we have been blessed with all spiritual benediction; and because He is our only Master, who has to teach us; our only Lord, on whom we ought to depend; our only Head, to whom we must belong; our only Model, to whom we should conform ourselves; our only Physician, who can heal us; our only Shepherd, who can feed us; our only Way, who can lead us; our only Truth, who can make us grow; our only Life, who can animate us; and our only All in all things, who can suffice us. There has been no other name given under heaven, except the name of Jesus, by which we can be saved. God has laid no other foundation of our salvation, of our perfection, and of our glory, except Jesus Christ.
62. If, then, we establish the solid devotion to our Blessed Lady, it is only to establish more perfectly the devotion to Jesus Christ, and to put forward an easy and secure means for finding Jesus Christ If devotion to our Lady removed us from Jesus Christ, we should have to reject it as an illusion of the devil; but on the contrary, so far from this being the case, there is nothing which makes devotion to our Lady more necessary for us, as I have already shown, and will show still further hereafter, than that it is the means of finding Jesus Christ perfectly, of loving Him tenderly, and of serving Him faithfully.
True Devotion and Total Consecration Program
1. Before starting the 33 Day Preparation leading to the formal Act of Consecration, we recommend spending some time in private reading of the book, "True Devotion to Mary." As certain parts of the book may not easily be understood, we further recommend that if possible, form a small group for sharing, reflections and discussions. Please note that the book has had many editions, publishers and versions.
2. Choose a Marian Feast day for your Formal Act of Consecration. Examples of these Feast Days honoring Our Blessed Virgin Mary are: Our Lady of Lourdes (Feb 11); Feast of the Annunciation (March 25), Our Lady of Mount Carmel (July 16) .
